The turtle pond lies just north of the UT Tower and houses UT’s unofficial school mascots, the resident turtles. The turtle population has increased due to people treating the pond as a place to dump turtles, said herpetology curator Travis LaDuc.
In a recent study, UT psychology researchers teamed up with the UT3D program to develop an immersive, 3D video exposure-based therapy for arachnophobia, or the fear of spiders. Then, they recruited people to undergo the study and face their fear.
Marian Williams-Brown, a clinical professor at UT’s Dell Medical School and the Women’s Health Institute, is working to improve early detection techniques for ovarian cancer. In a collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center, Williams-Brown is conducting a study to create an algorithm based on a person’s age and CA125 levels that detects ovarian cancer more accurately.
