Sophomore wide receiver Ryan Newsome announced on Twitter Sunday that he plans to transfer from the University.
“This is a decision that has been on my heart for a while now,” Newsome said in his statement. “I’ve realized that it is only necessary for my career going forward.”
Newsome’s departure comes after the team added two top receiving prospects in freshmen Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay. The competition for playing time at the position is expected to be deep in training camp.
“My time here has been short lived,” Newsome said. “But I will never the friends and relationships that I’ve built here that will last a lifetime.”
Newsome played in five games and recorded five receptions as a freshman. He also contributed on special teams, returning six kicks for an average of 18.3 yards.
He has yet to announce his transfer-destination.
