No. 15 Texas topped Southern Mississippi 4-0 on Saturday in the finals of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi.
The Longhorns won at the first and third doubles positions to take home the doubles point. Sophomore Adrian Ortiz and senior Michael Riechmann defeated sophomore Daniel Merker and senior Tarun Surat at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. Freshman Harrison Scott teamed up with sophomore John Mee to edge a 6-3 win over freshman Jorman Reyes and senior Rakshit Rishi at No. 3 doubles.
“We had a good showing today, and I thought the guys really played hard,” head coach Michael Center said. “A lot of guys contributed this weekend. It was a great test for us to come down here and be the top seed and get the job done.”
In singles play, junior George Goldhoff, who won the Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Thursday, defeated junior Wen-Po Tseng at first singles, 6-1, 6-1. Scott added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Surat at second singles, giving Texas a 3-0 lead. To take home the win, Riechmann posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Merker at No. 5 singles.
Texas will return to action is dual-match play next weekend when they travel to San Diego to face the Toreros.
