A slow day for the Longhorns suddenly became a huge success Friday night at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa.

The Longhorns got going late in the night, boosting them into third place going into day two of the competition Saturday. Oklahoma State leads the conference tournament with 37 points, followed by Kansas State with 35 points and Texas with 34.5 points.

The Longhorns were thrust into good position following their success in the weight throw and pole vault events.

Sophomore Alan Zapalac finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 20.40m.

The Longhorns particularly shined in the pole vault. Texas senior Reese Watson won the event, while redshirt freshman Barret Poth finished third.

To cap off the night, Texas finished third in the distance medley behind Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Highlighting one of many finals tomorrow is freshman football wide receiver John Burt, who qualified for Saturday’s finals in the 60m hurdles.
